Gearbox chip tuning is the process of optimising the operation of an automatic transmission, removing factory restrictions, and adjusting settings to match a tuned engine. This ensures that the engine tuning delivers the intended performance gains. Gearbox ECU modifications can:

• Remove torque limiters: Unlock the full power potential of your engine.
• Adjust shift points and load thresholds: Improve gear change smoothness and responsiveness.
• Optimise gear progression: Adapt gearbox behaviour to driving style and road conditions.

We are one of the few workshops offering both engine chip tuning and gearbox ECU tuning. We tune DSG, S-Tronic, Tiptronic, and Multitronic gearboxes either alongside engine tuning or separately if your engine has already been tuned elsewhere. However, for the best results, we recommend optimising your gearbox at the same time as your engine.

Modern automatic transmissions and dual-clutch gearboxes like DSG and S-Tronic, just like engines, are controlled by an ECU. This means their software can be tuned in much the same way as an engine control unit.

Gearbox chip tuning doesn’t directly increase engine power — the gearbox itself doesn’t generate power — but it allows the drivetrain to fully harness the increased torque and power from a tuned engine.

When modifying gearbox software, we adjust the torque limiters that restrict how much power is transferred to the drivetrain. Depending on the customer’s needs and the specific gearbox model, we can modify parameters such as:

• Shift RPM and load thresholds

• Shift timing
• Maximum RPM before upshifting (allowing the engine to reach higher RPMs)
• Torque thresholds for downshifting
